What is ADAS, and why does it need calibration?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — the collection of safety technologies built into modern vehicles that help prevent collisions and assist with driving. Examples include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

These systems rely on cameras, radar sensors, and ultrasonic sensors mounted at precise positions on your vehicle. Calibration is the process of aligning those sensors to the exact angles and reference points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. When a sensor is out of alignment — even by a fraction of a degree — the system operates incorrectly. It may react too late, too early, or not at all.

When is ADAS calibration required?

Calibration is required any time the position or angle of an ADAS sensor changes. The most common triggers are: windshield replacement (forward-facing camera is mounted to the glass), front-end collision repair or bumper replacement, suspension or steering alignment work, replacement of a camera, radar, or sensor unit, wheel alignment or ride height adjustment, and any repair that requires removing or repositioning a sensor.

If your vehicle's ADAS warning light is on after any of these services, calibration is almost certainly required before the system will function correctly.

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?

Static calibration is performed in a controlled environment — our calibration bay — using manufacturer-specified targets positioned at precise distances and angles in front of the vehicle. The vehicle remains stationary throughout. Most forward-facing camera calibrations use this method.

Dynamic calibration requires the vehicle to be driven at specific speeds on roads with clear lane markings while the system resets itself using real-world visual data. Some radar and rear camera systems use this method.

Many vehicles require both — a static calibration first, followed by a dynamic drive cycle to complete the process. We look up your vehicle's OEM requirements before you arrive so there are no surprises.

My ADAS warning light isn't on. Do I still need calibration after a windshield replacement?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and this is one of the most important things to understand about ADAS systems. A misaligned camera or sensor does not always trigger a warning light. The system continues to operate; it just operates incorrectly. Lane departure warnings may fire late. Emergency braking may activate at the wrong distance. Blind-spot alerts may miss vehicles in adjacent lanes.

The absence of a warning light is not confirmation that calibration is unnecessary. If your vehicle has a forward-facing ADAS camera mounted to the windshield — which most vehicles made after 2016 do — recalibration is required after any windshield replacement, regardless of whether a warning light appears.

How long does a calibration take?

Most calibrations are completed in 1–2 hours. Static-only calibrations are typically on the shorter end. Vehicles requiring both static and dynamic calibration take longer, as the dynamic drive cycle adds time after the static procedure is complete.

Do I need to bring my vehicle to you, or do you come to me?

Static calibrations must be performed in a controlled environment — our calibration bay. The procedure requires manufacturer-specified targets positioned at precise distances and angles, which is only possible in a dedicated space.

Dynamic calibrations can sometimes be performed at your location or at your auto glass shop, since they require a drive cycle rather than a fixed target setup. Contact us to discuss your situation and we'll advise the best approach.

What equipment do you use?

We use manufacturer-specified calibration targets and OEM-grade diagnostic equipment — not generic aftermarket substitutes. The tolerances involved in ADAS calibration are measured in fractions of a degree. The equipment has to match the specification.

After calibration, we run a full diagnostic scan to confirm every ADAS system is reading within manufacturer tolerances before the vehicle leaves our bay.

Question 8

What documentation do I receive after calibration?

You receive a calibration certificate documenting the work performed, the systems calibrated, and the post-calibration scan results. This documentation is accepted by insurance companies and is useful for warranty records.

If your insurance policy covers ADAS recalibration after windshield replacement (many do), the certificate is the document your insurer will request.

Why does windshield replacement require ADAS recalibration?

On most modern vehicles, the forward-facing ADAS camera is mounted directly to the windshield — typically at the top center, behind the rearview mirror. When the windshield is replaced, the camera's mounting position changes slightly, even if it appears identical to the original. That shift — fractions of a millimeter in position, fractions of a degree in angle — is enough to take the camera out of the calibration window the manufacturer requires.

Auto glass industry standards and most vehicle manufacturer service manuals require ADAS recalibration after any windshield replacement. It is not optional.

Question 11

Does insurance cover ADAS recalibration after windshield replacement?

Accepted Answer

Many insurance policies now cover ADAS recalibration as part of a windshield replacement claim. Coverage varies by policy and insurer. If your glass shop didn't mention recalibration, ask them — or contact your insurer directly to confirm what's covered under your policy.

We provide a calibration certificate that documents the work performed, which is the document most insurers require to process the claim.

Question 12

My glass shop said recalibration isn't necessary. Is that correct?

If your vehicle has a forward-facing ADAS camera mounted to the windshield, recalibration is required after replacement — regardless of what the glass shop advises. Some shops are not equipped to perform calibration and may downplay the requirement as a result.

The requirement comes from the vehicle manufacturer, not from us. Check your vehicle's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer's service line if you want confirmation independent of any service provider.
